F1 Drivers React to New Two-Stop Rule for Monaco GP

Monte Carlo, Monaco – Formula 1 will implement a new two-stop rule for the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend, a change aimed at increasing excitement during the race. Each driver must use at least three different sets of tyres, which means making at least two visits to the pit lane. This new regulation will apply during the event on May 25, 2025.
In previous races, drivers were only required to use two different slick tyre compounds, which often led to predictable one-stop strategies. However, the introduction of the two-stop rule aims to bring more action to the tight and twisty streets of Monaco, where overtaking is notoriously difficult.
If the race is dry and drivers do not use wet tyres, they must still race on at least two different slick compounds. Additionally, drivers will receive an extra set of full wet tyres to accommodate potential wet conditions during the race.
According to Article 30.5 of the Sporting Regulations, failing to comply with the new tyre rules could result in severe penalties. Drivers who do not follow the two-stop requirement might face disqualification from the race results, while others could receive time penalties added to their final times.
Max Verstappen, the reigning World Champion, welcomed the change during a media briefing, stating that it could “spice things up” and lead to unpredictable racing situations, including potential Safety Car interventions. He added, “Maybe with the two-stop it can create something different, people gambling, guessing when the right time is to box.”
Pierre Gasly of Alpine also expressed optimism about the change, highlighting opportunities for unexpected outcomes during the race. He noted the importance of effective qualifying to set up a successful race strategy.
Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin said the two-stop requirement might renew hope for changing positions after qualifying. He expressed enthusiasm to see how it affects the race dynamics, stating, “I think it’s a good thing… but we’ll see on Sunday night.”
With the countdown to the Monaco Grand Prix underway, drivers and teams are preparing for a busy weekend full of strategy adjustments, as they navigate the challenges of one of the world’s most demanding circuits.
