Duke’s Cooper Flagg Cleared for NCAA Tournament After Ankle Injury

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cooper Flagg, the standout freshman for the Duke Blue Devils, will be available for the NCAA Tournament despite suffering a left ankle injury during the ACC Tournament opener on Thursday. Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of men’s basketball, announced Saturday that Flagg’s status will not affect Duke’s seeding for March Madness.
In an interview with CBS, Gavitt stated, “What we understand from communication with Duke and the ACC is that Cooper Flagg will be available for the NCAA tournament, so don’t expect that to impact their seeding.” Flagg, who was named ACC Player of the Year, is projected as the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Flagg’s injury occurred during Duke’s 78-70 victory over Georgia Tech when he landed awkwardly while attempting to secure a rebound just before halftime. He was helped off the court and subsequently transported in a wheelchair for evaluation. Fortunately, X-rays revealed no fractures.
After missing Friday’s semifinal win against rival North Carolina, Coach Jon Scheyer confirmed Flagg would not participate in Saturday’s ACC title game against Louisville to prioritize his recovery. “As far as [Flagg] goes, he’s doing better. Sprained ankle. All the imaging came back negative… Our goal is to have him ready for the NCAA tournament,” Scheyer said.
While Flagg offered support from the bench against North Carolina, his two-way prowess was missed during a tense contest. The Blue Devils managed to edge out the Tar Heels, 74-71, aided by a late lane violation from North Carolina. Duke’s resilience in the face of adversity has demonstrated their championship capabilities despite significant injuries.
Flagg has contributed significantly this season, leading the Blue Devils in scoring with an average of 18.9 points per game, and he has proven vital to their success, having accumulated 604 total points, 240 rebounds, 131 assists, 49 steals, and 40 blocks.
As Duke prepares for the NCAA Tournament, they are looking to capitalize on their impressive season, having finished 19-1 in ACC play to secure the regular-season title. With Flagg’s return expected, the Blue Devils are poised to make a deep run in March Madness, seeking their sixth national championship.
Gavitt noted that Flagg is not the only player injury being monitored by the selection committee, as team health can play a crucial role in tournament seeding. The Blue Devils, positioned for a No. 1 seed, will face increased pressure to perform as they aim for the title they last captured a decade ago.
