Duke’s Cooper Flagg Misses Games for Family Beach Trip
DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University freshman basketball star Cooper Flagg will miss two weeks of games due to a pre-planned family vacation to Hilton Head Island, the 18-year-old NBA prospect confirmed Tuesday. Flagg, a key player for the Blue Devils, expressed regret but emphasized the importance of the annual family tradition.
“I really want to be there for all my Duke teammates, but this is something we’ve had planned for months,” said Flagg, who was seen waiting outside his dorm with a backpack and pillow as his parents prepared to pick him up. “We take a beach trip every year. It’s kind of a big deal, so I can’t miss it. The hotel’s already booked. Plus, it will be good to see Grandma.”
Flagg, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2024 class according to 247Sports, has been a standout performer for Duke this season. He leads the team in points (17.4), rebounds (8.4), assists (3.6), and blocks (1.3) per game. His absence comes as Duke has won eight consecutive games, with Flagg scoring in double figures in all but one of those contests.
The freshman phenom acknowledged that his return to the court might be delayed if he suffers from sunburn or fatigue. “I’d like to get back as quickly as possible, but it might be kind of tricky considering my Mom scheduled a sunset dolphin cruise for the last day,” Flagg added.
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer expressed understanding but noted the challenge of adjusting the lineup. “Cooper is a vital part of our team, but family comes first. We’ll make the necessary adjustments and look forward to his return,” Scheyer said.
Flagg’s absence comes at a critical time as Duke continues its push for the ACC title. The Blue Devils are currently 4-0 in conference play, with Flagg recording a double-double (24 points, 11 rebounds) in their most recent victory. His performance earned him Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Despite the setback, Flagg remains focused on his long-term goals. “I’m committed to helping Duke win, but this trip is important to my family. I’ll be back soon and ready to contribute,” he said.
