Duke Prepares for Elite Eight Showdown Against Alabama

NEWARK, N.J. – Duke University’s basketball team is set to face No. 2 seed Alabama in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at 7:49 p.m. CT at Prudential Center. Both teams aim for a spot in the Final Four after securing hard-fought victories in the previous rounds.
Head coach Jon Scheyer spoke to the media on Friday, assessing the evolution of basketball as it increasingly emphasizes three-point shooting. When asked about the trend, Scheyer stated, “I don’t think – unless the rules change, I don’t think it can go back because at the end of the day, it’s math.” He elaborated that the math creates a significant advantage for teams that excel at shooting from beyond the arc.
Reflecting on the increase in pace of play across basketball, Scheyer stressed the importance of preparation for Duke’s game against Alabama. “We have to pick our spots,” he said. “The recovery is tough. Our guys didn’t get back until about 2:00, 2:30 last night,” referring to their late-night return following the prior game.
Despite the quick turnaround, Scheyer remained optimistic about his team’s readiness. “Of course, Alabama has had a heck of a schedule. I feel we have too, but it’s been different. I don’t think that gives them any more of a leg up tomorrow based on conference or ACC, SEC,” he remarked, clearly respecting the strength of Alabama’s SEC conference.
The conversation also touched on college basketball’s competitive landscape, with Scheyer recognizing the SEC’s achievements this season. “Their league has been awesome this year,” he acknowledged, while maintaining that each conference prepares its teams in unique ways. “Playing different opponents at different times of the year prepares you in different ways,” he said.
In light of their emotional games, Scheyer was asked about the preparation process after such a taxing experience. “It was literally right to Alabama, watching a ton of film on them,” he shared. His adrenaline carried him through the night as he pored over game footage, knowing the swift nature of the tournament requires quick adjustments and deep analysis.
As the Duke team gears up for one of the most significant challenges in college basketball, Scheyer’s emphasis on preparation and adaptability will be crucial in their quest for victory against a relentless Alabama squad.
