KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Boston Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia made a special visit to the team this weekend, spending time in the dugout as the Red Sox faced off against the Kansas City Royals. This marked Pedroia’s second straight day with the team and reflected his ongoing connection with the franchise.

Pedroia, his wife Kelli, and their three sons traveled from Arizona to Kansas City for a family outing, coinciding with Mother’s Day weekend. “He called me last week,” said manager Alex Cora. “They had the weekend off, and he wanted to come to Kansas City. I was like, ‘It’s up to you. It’s your family.’”

The visit was not only a chance for family time but also offered Pedroia a moment to reconnect with Royals superstar Bobby Witt Jr. Pedroia’s first agent was Bobby Witt Sr., and he fondly remembers knowing Witt Jr. when the latter was a child. “He wanted to see the Red Sox but they wanted to meet Witt, too,” Cora said.

Pedroia participated in team activities and even invited one of his sons to join a game with the players. “Just to be around us, it means a lot to them and obviously, having him around is always cool,” Cora mentioned. Pedroia, a four-time Gold Glove Award winner, has taken time off from baseball to coach his sons, aged 11, 12, and 15.

The former infielder’s presence brings positive energy to the clubhouse, reinforcing bonds with current players. Rookie Kristian Campbell could benefit from Pedroia’s insights as he aims to establish himself at second base, a position that has faced uncertainties since Pedroia’s retirement.

While Pedroia’s visit was largely a family affair, it highlighted the long-standing respect he shares with the Red Sox and provided a unique opportunity for his sons to witness major league baseball firsthand. His trip symbolized both personal connections and the importance of family within the context of sports.

As the weekend unfolded, it became evident that Pedroia’s journey to Kansas City was as much about family as it was about baseball, creating memorable moments for all involved.
