Dusty May Michigan Basketball Coach Announcement

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Dusty May, the head coach of the University of Michigan men’s basketball team, has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the university announced Friday evening. As the Wolverines prepare for a key matchup against Michigan State, athletic director Warde Manuel expressed enthusiasm about May’s future with the program.

“I am excited to announce that Dusty and I have agreed to a new multi-year contract,” said Manuel in a prepared statement. “His commitment to this University and the success of the men’s basketball program has far exceeded our expectations and makes us all excited for what the future holds.”

May, who is in his first season with the Wolverines, has led the team to a 20-5 overall record and a 12-2 record in the Big Ten. These results mark a significant improvement from last season’s 8-25 finish. May’s success has positioned him as one of the most notable first-year head coaches in the nation, and he is currently on the Naismith Men’s Coach of the Year watchlist.

In his statement, May expressed gratitude to Manuel, University of Michigan President Santa Ono, and the Board of Regents for their trust and support. “My goal is to bring continued success to this historic program. We cannot reach that goal without the hard work that my staff and players put into this program. We have built a solid foundation; however, there is much more work to be done,” he said.

May’s previous contract was a five-year deal that paid $3.75 million annually. The university has not disclosed the terms of the new contract extension. As speculation swirled about May’s interest in Indiana’s head coaching position, he reassured fans of his commitment to Michigan. “I love being at Michigan. I love our team,” May said earlier this month after a win against Indiana.

Ono also weighed in, stating, “I am thrilled that Dusty will be with us long term. I want to thank Warde for his outstanding leadership and for getting this done.” This endorsement solidifies May’s role as a pivotal figure in Michigan’s basketball program moving forward.

Fans can look forward to continued coverage of the Wolverines as they aim for the Big Ten regular-season championship, a possible double bye in the upcoming conference tournament, and a return to the NCAA Tournament. The team’s next challenge will be against rival Michigan State, a game set to take place tonight at the Crisler Center.
