Eagles Coach Doug Nussmeier Interviews for Saints Offensive Coordinator Role

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Doug Nussmeier, the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, is set to interview for the New Orleans Saints‘ offensive coordinator position this Sunday. The report by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media comes shortly after Kellen Moore was appointed as head coach of the Saints, and it’s possible Nussmeier will follow him again in his coaching career.
Nussmeier, who initially joined the NFL as a player with the Saints after being drafted by the team in 1994, had a brief playing career before transitioning into coaching. He played five games, including two starts, for the Saints during the 1996-97 seasons. His coaching career began in the Canadian Football League in 1997 and includes stints at notable college programs such as Florida, Michigan, Alabama, Washington, and Fresno State, where he served as offensive coordinator.
Despite Nussmeier’s extensive coaching experience, including various roles with NFL teams such as the Rams, Cowboys, and Chargers, he has not yet held an offensive coordinator position in the NFL. However, he has demonstrated his capabilities in developing quarterbacks, as evidenced by his work with Jalen Hurts, who won Super Bowl MVP under his guidance.
Nussmeier’s potential move to the Saints would bring him closer to his son, Garrett Nussmeier, who is currently the starting quarterback at Louisiana State University (LSU) and is among the Heisman Trophy favorites for 2025.
Meanwhile, Nussmeier is not the only Eagles coach being considered by the Saints. The team is also set to interview Christian Parker, the Eagles’ passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, for their defensive coordinator vacancy. Parker has gained attention for his role in helping the Eagles achieve the top pass defense in the NFL during the 2024 season.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni may not welcome the poaching of his staff, as he has previously experienced similar losses, including sending linebackers coach Nick Rallis to the Arizona Cardinals as their defensive coordinator following the 2022 season. With the departure of Nussmeier, the Eagles may have to seek a replacement, potentially considering coaches already on staff like Kevin Patullo, or looking externally for new talent.
The Saints are actively working to fill their coaching vacancies following Moore’s hiring, which marks a significant shift in the organization’s leadership amid the offseason. With both offensive and defensive coordinator roles still open, the Saints are evaluating other candidates, including former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, who is also interviewing on Sunday. Staley and Parker are viewed as strong contenders for their respective roles.
