Doug Nussmeier New Orleans Saints Coaching

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Doug Nussmeier, the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, has been hired as the New Orleans Saints‘ new offensive coordinator, multiple sources reported Thursday.

Nussmeier is following head coach Kellen Moore, who previously served as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, to New Orleans. This marks Nussmeier’s first role as an offensive coordinator after years of experience as a coach. He is familiar with the Saints, having been drafted by the team in 1994 as a quarterback out of Idaho.

During the 2024 NFL season, Nussmeier and Moore played significant roles in the Eagles’ success, contributing to the team’s emergence as the league’s seventh-highest scoring offense and helping lead Philadelphia to its second Super Bowl victory. They now aim to enhance a Saints offense that ranked 19th in scoring and 30th in total yards last season.

The duo has a long-standing professional relationship, having worked closely together over the last seven seasons. Nussmeier joined the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff in 2018 as a tight ends coach, while Moore took on the role of quarterbacks coach. Between 2019 and 2022, Moore served as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator with Nussmeier as quarterbacks coach for the last two of those years. Their partnership continued during their time with the Los Angeles Chargers and the Eagles.

As Nussmeier begins this new chapter in his career, he will aim to tackle the challenges faced by the Saints offense. The team is looking for a turnaround after a disappointing previous season, marking the start of a promising coaching era.

The Saints are not just focusing on the offensive side of the game. Alongside Nussmeier’s hiring, reports indicate that Scott Tolzien will be brought in as the new quarterbacks coach in a reunion with Moore. Tolzien, a former NFL quarterback, has gained recognition as a rising young coach.

Additionally, Joel Thomas is confirmed to be returning as running backs coach after a previous stint with the Saints from 2015 to 2018, where the team led the NFL in total rushing touchdowns. The Saints are actively filling their coaching staff as they prepare for the upcoming season.
