Eagles’ Jake Elliott Shatters Super Bowl Records Amid Coaching Changes

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Jake Elliott demonstrated his elite kicking ability during the 2024 NFL season, culminating in a record-setting performance at the Super Bowl. On February 11, 2025, Elliott scored 16 points, breaking the record for the most points by a kicker in Super Bowl history. Additionally, he tied the record for field goals made in the game with four.
Throughout the season, Elliott’s consistent performance also included crucial kicks in challenging weather conditions, particularly during the Divisional Round against the Los Angeles Rams, where he converted three significant field goals. Elliott credited his success to maintaining a steady mindset and trusting his preparation. “I think I stayed pretty even-keeled every week and kind of just trusted my process,” Elliott said. “A few of the longer ones didn’t go my way, but I don’t feel like the numbers tell the story of my season.”
As Elliott set the tone for the kicking game, punter Braden Mann averaged 48.8 gross yards per punt (42.1 net) throughout the season, primarily handling kickoff duties. Long snapper Rick Lovato continued providing reliable snaps, crucial for Elliott’s record-setting year.
The return game saw Cooper DeJean stepping in for the injured Britain Covey, showcasing his versatility by returning 21 punts for 211 yards while also playing as a nickel cornerback. In addition, running backs Will Shipley, Kenneth Gainwell, and Isaiah Rodgers returned kickoffs, demonstrating the Eagles’ depth and athleticism in the new kickoff format introduced in 2024.
However, the offseason raises questions about the future of several key players. Lovato is an unrestricted free agent this year. Additionally, questions loom over whether DeJean will transition to a full-time punt returner position or continue his role on defense.
As the offseason progresses, attention will shift to how the Eagles will navigate free agency, particularly regarding their special teams. With Elliott’s franchise postseason records—43 points and 10 made field goals—setting the bar high, the organization must balance maintaining their successful unit while incorporating new talent.
Notable Stat: Elliott now holds franchise postseason records in points scored (43) and field goals made (10) during the playoffs.
In other parts of the league, teams are also preparing for the upcoming offseason. The Los Angeles Chargers are evaluating their linebacker group, which proved instrumental in their first-ranked scoring defense in 2024. With only two guaranteed returning players, the Chargers will explore free agency to bolster their defense further.
Free agency will be a critical focus across the NFL as teams seek to secure and enhance their rosters. The Eagles, Chargers, and other organizations face pivotal decisions that will shape their paths heading into the 2025 season.
