Eagles’ Zack Baun Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week Amid Stellar Season
Zack Baun, the standout inside linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, has been named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week, a recognition that underscores his significant impact on the team’s defensive performance this season.
Despite his modest salary of $1.6 million, Baun has been a key factor in the Eagles’ defensive improvement. Since their Week 5 bye, the Eagles have notably reduced yards allowed after contact, now ranking sixth in the NFL in this category. Baun leads all Eagles linebackers with 87 tackles, the highest count through the first nine games since at least 2000.
Baun’s impressive stats include two sacks and three forced fumbles, highlighting his versatility and effectiveness on the field. His performance has contributed to the Eagles’ current five-game win streak, during which they have allowed just 2.29 yards after contact, ranking second in the league.
The Eagles have also seen a significant increase in turnovers, forcing eight in their last three games, and have the third-highest sack rate in the NFL at 10.5% of dropbacks during the same period. Baun’s contributions are a major part of this success.
As the season progresses, the Eagles will need to assess their future linebacker needs, particularly concerning Baun’s contract situation. His continued strong performance could lead to contract extension discussions as the team aims to secure key defensive players for the long term.
