Lo'eau Labonta Uswnt Debut Soccer

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Lo’eau LaBonta, a midfielder for FC Kansas City, received her first call-up to the U.S. women’s national team (USWNT) at age 32. This pivotal moment arrived on May 29, 2025, when head coach Emma Hayes contacted her. LaBonta joins her younger club teammates, Claire Hutton, 19, and Michelle Cooper, 22, on the roster.

Reflecting on the unusual dynamic, LaBonta joked, “Usually, I’m the one congratulating them like I’m the teen mom. It was just funny when my babies and my children were all coming up and so proud of me.” She is set to compete in friendly matches against China and Jamaica.

LaBonta is not just about fresh energy; she is renowned in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) for her elaborate goal celebrations. “They said, let’s bring in this five-foot fireball and see if that helps,” she remarked with enthusiasm.

Despite her jovial exterior, LaBonta carries a serious commitment to contribute to the team. She stated, “I’m going in expecting nothing, and willing to give everything.” Hayes confirmed that LaBonta’s long-awaited call-up was well-deserved, citing her consistent performance and leadership qualities.

Injuries have created an opening for LaBonta on the national team, allowing her a shot during an off-year in the tournament cycle. The same flexibility allowed Hayes to name LaBonta leading into a roster that includes emerging talents and experienced players alike.

LaBonta began her NWSL career when drafted by Sky Blue FC in 2015, later joining FC Kansas City, the Utah Royals, and returning to Kansas City in 2021 after the franchise’s relocation. She has actively contributed to shaping her team’s culture and has been pivotal in their success.

After a strong start in the NWSL, LaBonta has refined her skills under the coaching of Vlatko Andonovski, significantly improving her defensive work. Her tackle win-rate soared to an impressive 62.2% in the first ten games of 2025.

After the match against China, LaBonta made history as the oldest player to debut for the USWNT. Commenting on her performance, she emphasized her desire to support her teammates, saying, “I’m focused on how I can help the players who had been on the field from the start.”

Looking ahead, LaBonta is eager for her next challenge against Jamaica, where she is expected to bring her seasoned energy and skills to the group.
