Eddie George Among Notable HBCU Names Nominated for Pro Football Hall of Fame
Eddie George, the renowned former NFL running back and current head coach of the Tennessee State University Tigers, has been nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This marks his second time as a semifinalist, following his initial nomination in 2022.
George’s illustrious career includes winning the Heisman Trophy in 1995 while playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He accumulated 3,768 rushing yards and 534 receiving yards, scoring a total of 45 touchdowns during his college years. In the NFL, George played for the Tennessee Titans and Dallas Cowboys, rushing for 10,441 yards and scoring 78 touchdowns over his career. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
Alongside George, other notable HBCU alumni such as Ben Coates of Livingstone College, Robert Mathis of Alabama A&M, and Steve McNair of Alcorn State University have also been nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The initial list of 167 nominees has been narrowed down to 50, with the selection committee set to choose 15 modern-era finalists before the final vote to determine the Class of 2025.
George’s nomination is a testament to his enduring legacy in football, both as a player and now as a coach. His achievements on and off the field continue to inspire and influence the sport.
