Eddie George Chicago Bears Head Coach Interview

CHICAGO, Ill. – Eddie George, the former NFL star and current head coach at Tennessee State University, is set to interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy on Sunday morning. The Bears are casting a wide net in their search to replace Matt Eberflus, who was fired earlier this year.

George, 51, has been the head coach at Tennessee State since 2021, leading the Tigers from a 5-6 record in his first season to a 9-4 mark in 2024. His efforts earned him the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors. Before his coaching career, George had a decorated NFL career, primarily with the Tennessee Titans, where he played from 1996 to 2003.

“How about this?” said Jay Glazer on the NFL on FOX postgame show. “The Chicago Bears – who I know Ben Johnson’s on their list – here’s a surprise candidate that they are interviewing tomorrow. … Eddie George. How about that? He was the head coach at Tennessee State the last four years. Was Coach of the Year in his conference, won his conference. They will interview him tomorrow morning.”

If George’s interview is in-person, he will be the second minority candidate to speak with the Bears at Halas Hall after Ron Rivera, fulfilling the NFL’s Rooney Rule requirements. This would allow the Bears to make a hire shortly thereafter.

George’s NFL career began in 1996 with the Houston Oilers, who later became the Tennessee Titans. He played and started in every game at running back for the team over eight seasons, consistently racking up over 900 yards each year. He spent the final year of his playing career in 2004 with the Dallas Cowboys. In 2019, the Titans retired his No. 27 jersey.

Now, George could find himself back in the NFL, this time as a head coach. The Bears are looking for a leader to guide the team into a new era, and George’s combination of NFL experience and recent coaching success makes him a compelling candidate.
