NEWCASTLE, England (AP) — Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been admitted to the hospital for ongoing tests after feeling unwell for several days, the club announced Saturday. Howe, 47, was hospitalized late Friday night and is currently conscious and in communication with family.

A statement from the club confirmed that medical staff is monitoring Howe, who will miss the Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday. In his absence, assistant managers Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones are set to lead the team at St. James' Park.

“Medical staff kept Eddie in hospital overnight for further tests, which are ongoing,” the statement noted. “He is conscious and talking with his family, and is continuing to receive expert medical care.”

Howe has been at the helm of Newcastle since November 2021, replacing Steve Bruce. Under his guidance, Newcastle recently secured their first domestic trophy in 70 years by winning the EFL Cup against Liverpool last month at Wembley Stadium.

Currently, Newcastle sits seventh in the Premier League standings, having achieved finishes of 11th, fourth, and seventh in the last three seasons. In his 165 matches in charge, Howe has led the team to 84 victories, 36 draws, and 45 losses.

During his tenure, Howe has also seen the Magpies take on formidable opponents, including Paris St-Germain in the Champions League group stage this season, although they did not advance to the knockout phase.

Before joining Newcastle, Howe had two terms as Bournemouth’s head coach, alongside a brief time at Burnley. Speculation about his potential future in management has circulated, especially regarding the England national team. However, Howe clarified he was not interviewed to replace Gareth Southgate, who was succeeded by Thomas Tuchel last October.

The club has expressed hope for Howe’s speedy recovery and will provide updates as they arise.
