The Edmonton Elks faced a tough preseason loss in their debut against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium. The game was a close battle, but turnovers plagued the Elks offense and special teams, resulting in a narrow 28-27 victory for the Roughriders. Despite dominating on both offense and defense, the Elks couldn’t overcome their five turnovers, including one interception and four fumbles.

Rookie kicker Vincent Blanchard had a chance to win the game late with a 57-yard field goal attempt, but the kick narrowly missed. General Manager and Head Coach Chris Jones highlighted the importance of the preseason game for evaluating the team’s players, with a focus on the quarterbacks.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson, the new Elks quarterback, had a solid showing in his first appearance, showcasing efficiency in operating the Double E’s offense. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 190 yards in the first half, despite throwing one interception that was returned for a touchdown by Antoine Brooks Jr. Jerminic Smith also had a near-touchdown catch that was ruled incomplete.

Tre Ford took over in the second half and displayed his playmaking abilities, leading the Elks on a strong drive resulting in a touchdown by Trey Woodward Low. The Elks’ defense shined, holding the Roughriders to just 191 yards of total offense, with standout performances from Elliott Brown, Eric Black, and Joe Jackson who combined for multiple sacks.

Head Coach Chris Jones commended the defensive effort and noted the impact of turnovers on special teams. Both teams had their share of missed opportunities, but the Elks showed potential despite the preseason loss. The team looks to make adjustments and build on the promising signs ahead of their next preseason game against the BC Lions.
