BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Efraín Álvarez, the Mexican national team forward and Xolos de Tijuana star, has opened up about his potential move to Chivas de Guadalajara while expressing his focus on securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 22-year-old, who has been in stellar form since returning to Xolos, acknowledged the possibility of joining Chivas but emphasized his current commitment to the national team.

“It’s a family dream,” Álvarez said after Mexico’s match against Inter de Porto Alegre. “My father played there, my brother played for Chivas USA. If I stay in Tijuana, I’ll be happy. Tijuana is my home, and my wife and daughters are very happy there.” Álvarez, who also holds U.S. citizenship, has been linked with Chivas as their final reinforcement for the Clausura 2025 season.

Álvarez credited Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio for his resurgence after a challenging stint with LA Galaxy. “I’m happy at Xolos. They brought back my joy, and I’m growing more every day. I’m grateful to Osorio and the team president,” he said. Osorio’s rigorous training regimen helped Álvarez regain the form that once earned praise from Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Despite the speculation, Álvarez remains focused on his national team duties. “Right now, I’m focused on the national team. If I return to Xolos, I’ll be very happy. They’ve given me the opportunity to be happy,” he added. Álvarez, who recently returned to the Mexican squad after an absence during Gerardo 'Tata' Martino‘s tenure, is eager to impress coach Javier Aguirre ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

“It’s something beautiful and different. These are games that Javier gives us to prove ourselves and show that we’re ready for the big stage,” Álvarez said. The forward also addressed rumors of interest from América, stating, “When teams want you, it means you’re doing things right. But for now, I’m focused on the national team.”

Chivas appears to be leading the race for Álvarez’s signature, with talks reportedly advanced. The Mexican national team will face River Plate on January 21 at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, providing Álvarez another opportunity to showcase his talents.
