Egidio Cuadrado, Renowned ‘Rey Vallenato,’ Passes Away at 71
Egidio Cuadrado, the celebrated Colombian musician known as the ‘Rey Vallenato’ (King of Vallenato), passed away on October 21, 2024, at the age of 71. The Clínica Universitaria de Colombia confirmed his death in the early hours of Monday morning.
Cuadrado was a legendary figure in Colombian music, particularly in the genre of vallenato. He was crowned ‘Rey Vallenato’ in 1985 and was also known for his long-standing collaboration with the famous Colombian singer Carlos Vives, serving as his official accordionist.
In recent months, Cuadrado’s health had been a concern. In January 2024, he underwent a surgical procedure for a health condition, and more recently, he was hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) in Bogotá due to pneumonia.
Carlos Vives, his musical partner and co-founder of the group “La Provincia,” had expressed his support and solidarity with Cuadrado during his health struggles, ensuring him that he would be by his side until the end.
The news of Cuadrado’s passing has sent shockwaves through Colombia, with many in the music community and beyond mourning the loss of this musical icon.
