Eid E Milad Un Nabi Celebrations

New Delhi, September 16, 2024 — Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, also known as Mawlid, commemorates the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. This significant event is observed by many Muslims on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, which is the third month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Devotees engage in prayers, sermons, and recitations of the Prophet’s life and teachings during this day of celebration.

This year, Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi takes place on September 16, starting from the evening of September 15. It is important to note that the Prophet Muhammad, through whom the Quran was revealed to humanity, also passed away on the same day.

The festival holds immense religious importance for Muslims around the world, who observe it with enthusiasm and devotion. While Sunni Muslims celebrate on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal, Shia Muslims observe the occasion on the 17th day of the same month, both groups honoring the Prophet’s lessons.

During this joyous occasion, communities decorate streets and mosques with vibrant lights and green flags to symbolize Islam. People come together to offer special prayers and partake in charitable acts. Culinary delights such as Sevaiyan and Sheer Khurma are prepared and shared with family and friends. The act of giving to the less fortunate is particularly valued on this sacred day, reflecting the teachings of kindness and humanity espoused by the Prophet.

Young children celebrate Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi with enthusiasm, receiving gifts known as ‘Eidi‘ from elders. They gather with cousins and friends, creating cherished memories. Elders also take the opportunity to impart stories of the Prophet’s compassion and humanity to the younger generation, ensuring these teachings endure.

As families gather to celebrate, they remember and honor the life and legacy of Prophet Muhammad, embracing his messages of peace, love, and humility. The day serves as not only a remembrance of the Prophet’s birth but also of the enduring principles he taught, inviting reflection and observance among Muslims worldwide.
