Elina Svitolina Opens Up About Emotional Trips to Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine — Elina Svitolina, a prominent tennis player currently ranked 23rd in the WTA, has shared the emotional challenges her husband, ATP star Gael Monfils, faces when she returns to her war-torn homeland. During an interview, Svitolina detailed how Monfils becomes “very nervous” each time she travels back to Ukraine.
The couple, who has been married for four years and shares a child, find these farewells particularly difficult. Svitolina often makes these trips alone, opting not to bring Monfils or their daughter for safety reasons. “It is always very emotional when I say goodbye to him and my daughter,” she explained. “But I think he understands that it’s very important to me. He is my rock.”
Despite the palpable tension surrounding her visits, Svitolina emphasized the significance of returning home. She has reportedly raised over a million euros to support Ukraine’s efforts in the ongoing war, maintaining a strong commitment to raising international awareness about her country’s plight. Svitolina is also an ambassador for United24, a government initiative aimed at fundraising for Ukraine.
While sharing her experiences, Svitolina recounted her recent visit to Kharkiv during the off-season, where she learned to operate a rocket launcher at a military base. In light of the ongoing conflict, these trips serve not only as a way for her to connect with her roots but also to support the local community actively.
Reflecting on the emotional impact of her travels, Svitolina noted, “Gael gets very nervous before trips. Of course, he is afraid for me and for the family. I try to talk to him and explain the situation to him.” She emphasized her mission to represent the voice of Ukraine on an international stage, stating, “I feel a lot of pain for my country. I bear the burden of my family’s concern.”
Monfils, while worried about Svitolina’s safety, supports her charitable initiatives. According to Svitolina, “He often helps me with my fundraising efforts. I know it is very difficult, and I’m grateful for his understanding. Not many husbands would be as supportive in such a situation.”
As the conflict continues, Svitolina’s determination to advocate for her homeland remains unwavering. With each trip back to Ukraine, she not only faces personal challenges but also stands as a symbol of resilience for her fellow Ukrainians.
