Elite Eight Set as Four No. 1 Seeds Advance in NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS — The road to the Final Four intensified Friday night as four No. 1 seeds triumphed in a thrilling Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Houston, Auburn, Tennessee, and Michigan State secured their spots in the Elite Eight with significant victories.
In a nail-biting matchup, the Houston Cougars edged past the Purdue Boilermakers, 62-60, thanks to a last-second layup from Milos Uzan with just 0.9 seconds remaining. The game featured a dramatic exchange of leads, with Houston initially pulling ahead by 10 points before Purdue’s late surge tied the game at 60 with 35 seconds left. Houston’s performance on the boards was instrumental, collecting 16 offensive rebounds and converting them into 20 second-chance points.
“It feels great to win like this. We executed our game plan under pressure, and it paid off,” said Uzan, who finished the night with a game-high 22 points.
Auburn also showcased remarkable resilience, overcoming a lackluster first half to defeat Michigan 75-63. The Tigers, buoyed by a stellar second half led by Tahaad Pettiford’s 31 points, managed to suppress Michigan’s offensive efforts significantly. Auburn’s defense clamped down, especially on star player Danny Wolf, preventing him from scoring after the first half.
“We had to make some adjustments, and they worked. We didn’t panic and came out with more energy in the second half,” Pettiford remarked after the game.
Tennessee secured their place in the Elite Eight with a commanding 76-58 win over Kentucky. The Volunteers jumped to an early lead, reaching a 19-point advantage and never relinquishing it. Zakai Zeigler led the team with 18 points and 10 assists, showcasing the depth of Tennessee’s lineup.
“Winning the Elite Eight would mean everything. This program has worked for this moment for a long time,” said Zeigler, echoing his teammates’ excitement for the chance to make history.
Michigan State rounded out the day’s festivities with a hard-fought 71-66 victory against Ole Miss. The Spartans rallied back from a double-digit deficit, demonstrating the chemistry that head coach Tom Izzo emphasized leading up to the game. Key performances from Jaden Akins and Tre Holloway helped Michigan State maintain their edge going into the Elite Eight.
“This season has been about chemistry for us; we really trust each other on the court,” Izzo commented post-game.
The Elite Eight matchups are set, with Houston facing Tennessee and Auburn taking on Michigan State. Both games promise high-stakes drama as teams fight for a coveted spot in the Final Four on the road to the national championship.
