Elks Celebrate 1980s Championship Era
EDMONTON – The 1980s was an incredible time for the Edmonton Elks, with the team claiming multiple championships and solidifying their status as the City of Champions.
During that decade, the Elks won the Grey Cup four times, between 1980 and 1982, and again in 1987. They weren’t alone in their success—over in the NHL, the Edmonton Oilers were capturing Stanley Cups led by the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.
A big factor behind the Elks’ dominance was legendary coach Hugh Campbell. He was the mastermind behind the team during those successful years, and he gathered an amazing group of talented players. Notably, the 1980s All-Decade team reflects a fresh lineup compared to the previous decade.
Campbell emphasized how challenging it was to maintain such success, pointing out that while the first few championships might come easier, it’s tougher to keep winning as players’ careers progress. Each year, changes needed to be made, and tough decisions had to be made on cut down days.
Despite the challenges of change, the victories brought the team together, creating a lasting bond among players. During a recent gathering, former players were able to reconnect instantly, reigniting friendships that had stood the test of time.
<p“The chemistry off the field was just as strong as on the field,” reflected Warren Moon, a key player during those years. The camaraderie included barbecues and various team gatherings, making the group feel like family.
The 1980s All-Decade team proudly includes numerous members of the EE Wall of Honour, with notable names like Warren Moon and Jim Germany leading the charge. The joy and memories from that era still resonate within the heart of Edmonton’s football community.
