Emerson Hancock Pitching At Spring Training

PEORIA, Ariz. — Emerson Hancock demonstrated remarkable growth during the Mariners‘ spring training, showcasing newfound confidence and skill on the mound. As he prepared for a crucial final start in the rotation’s opening series, Hancock’s efforts caught the eye of teammates and coaches alike.

On a recent afternoon at the Mariners’ spring training complex, Hancock’s pitching drew enthusiastic cheers from his catcher, Justin Novak, and fellow players. With each pitch that snapped into the catcher’s glove, Novak’s excitement intensified: “Hell yeah!” and “NICE ONE!” echoed throughout the bullpen, amplifying the electric atmosphere.

Unlike his previous season, when Hancock struggled with command and consistency, this year’s version appeared more relaxed and confident. Over five games, he amassed 14 strikeouts in 13.2 innings, allowing only three walks—a significant improvement and less than one per start. Hancock also debuted a retooled sweeping slider and a cutter, adding diversity to his pitch arsenal.

“His offspeed has looked really, really good,” said Dan Wilson, a member of the Mariners’ coaching staff. “He’s really had a good camp. I think he’s taken a step forward here and has gotten comfortable with his stuff.” Hancock’s adjustments promise to complement his traditionally vertical sinker and changeup, giving batters more to contend with.

Hancock faced challenges transitioning from a top strikeout artist at Georgia to eliciting weak contact in higher levels of competition after being selected sixth overall in the shortened 2020 draft. However, he has embraced his evolution as a pitcher. “I like to attack and be fast,” Hancock said. “I know the guys behind me don’t want to be waiting around. If I can throw a lot of strikes, maybe we get some quick outs.”

Hancock’s self-awareness reflects a deeper understanding of his role within the team. He has come into his own, recognizing that he need not be an overpowering pitcher but rather a consistent and dependable presence. The running joke persists that he would easily secure a more prominent starting position on another team, yet Hancock remains focused on improving and enjoying the game.

“I’m just being myself a little more,” he explained. “At the end of the day, it’s so much more fun when you’re just out there enjoying it and have freedom in what you’re doing.” Hancock’s light-hearted approach has resonated not just in his performances but also in team camaraderie, as evidenced by his willingness to support teammates like Bryce Miller during their practices.

Reflecting on the long baseball season, Hancock emphasized the importance of maintaining a sense of fun. “The more you keep it light and realize it’s supposed to be fun, that can give you a different perspective,” he said.

Today, as Hancock gears up to take the mound in place of George Kirby, the stakes are higher than ever. Yet, the pressure hardly fazes him. Instead of viewing this game as a make-or-break moment, he approaches it with a carefree attitude. “He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do,” Wilson reiterated. “It’s been really fun to watch him.” Hancock’s journey reflects his resilience, and as he embraces his newfound lightness, he embraces both the game and himself.
