DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Dubai police detained a man who caused distress to British tennis player Emma Raducanu during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships earlier this week. The incident occurred on February 20, 2025, as Raducanu participated in a second-round match against Karolina Muchova.

According to the government of Dubai, the detained individual exhibited fixated behavior by approaching Raducanu, leaving her a note, and taking her photograph. This behavior led to her being visibly upset during the match, prompting security intervention to remove the individual from the venue.

“Following Raducanu’s complaint, Dubai Police acted swiftly to address the situation,” a spokesperson from Dubai’s media office stated. “The individual was ejected and banned from attending future WTA events while a threat assessment is conducted.”

During the match, Raducanu was seen in tears as she stood behind the umpire’s chair, clearly shaken by the encounter. Despite the distress, the athlete returned to the game after receiving support from Muchova.

Raducanu ultimately chose to drop the charges against the man, although he has signed a formal undertaking to maintain distance from her during future events. The government has not specified whether the man was released after the incident.

“Dubai remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors to the emirate,” the media office emphasized in its statement.

Raducanu, who won the U.S. Open in 2021 as a qualifier, has had a challenging time with injuries since her victory. Following this incident, she expressed gratitude to her supporters for their kindness and understanding.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has expressed its support for Raducanu, ensuring that situations like this will be taken seriously to prevent any future occurrences.
