Emmanuel Forbes Rising as Rams’ Top Cornerback After Injury
Los Angeles, CA — Emmanuel Forbes has emerged as the leading cornerback for the Los Angeles Rams after the team’s starting player, Ahkello Witherspoon, suffered a broken collarbone. Witherspoon is expected to miss two months, prompting questions about the team’s defensive strategy moving forward.
Initially, some fans urged the Rams to make a trade for a top cornerback. Instead, the organization chose to believe in Forbes, who had previously struggled considered a reclamation project. His first four games of the season saw him ranked 67th out of 74 cornerbacks, allowing an alarming 16.5 yards per reception, and he faced a perfect 158.3 passer rating against him.
Despite these setbacks, moments of promise shone through. During a game against the Tennessee Titans, Forbes gave up a significant play to rookie Elic Ayomanor but bounced back by successfully breaking up the following pass attempt. This tenacity highlighted his potential to learn from mistakes.
Forbes was originally drafted by the Washington Commanders, where he played in a style that did not suit his strengths, leading to a loss in confidence. The Rams, however, focused on rebuilding this confidence, placing Forbes in a system designed to play to his abilities.
Unlike under the Commanders, where he struggled in man coverage, the Rams employ a 3-4 defensive scheme that allows Forbes to thrive without being forced into physical confrontations. This change in environment has sparked a significant turnaround in his performance.
As Forbes settled into his role, his stats improved dramatically. From Weeks 6-11, he ranked as the seventh-highest graded cornerback in coverage. He permitted the lowest passer rating when targeted (33.7) and has made crucial plays with three pass breakups, further underscoring his adaptability in the new scheme.
Against one of the best wide receivers, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Forbes effectively limited his production, allowing just 30 yards on five targets, showcasing his development as a reliable defender.
The Rams’ record with Forbes has dramatically improved; they now boast the second-best pass defense. As Witherspoon works towards recovery, the Rams are likely to possess a formidable duo of cornerbacks once again.
