Emmy Submissions Drop: Who Will Shine in 2025?

LOS ANGELES, CA — Voting for the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations is now underway, with nearly 24,000 Television Academy members casting their votes until June 23. This year’s nominations will be revealed on July 15.
This season, the number of eligible submissions has seen a dip, with just 228 shows competing, a slight drop from 229 in 2024 and a notable decrease from 309 in 2023, which reflected the impact of the industry-wide strikes. The decline has also affected both the drama and comedy categories, which are guaranteed eight nominees each.
Among the returning contenders are shows like Disney+’s “Andor,” HBO Max’s “House of the Dragon,” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.” Newcomers such as “Matlock,” Hulu’s “Paradise,” and the hospital drama “The Pitt” are vying for attention. Only one show from last year’s drama nominees, “Slow Horses,” returned this season.
Competition is tight in acting categories as well. The lead actor race features big names like Pedro Pascal from “The Last of Us” and Lee Jung-jae from “Squid Game.” In the lead actress category, competing against Bella Ramsey from “The Last of Us” are heavyweights like Elisabeth Moss and Melanie Lynskey.
The limited series category has been particularly affected, submitting only 33 entries this year. As a result, it will feature only five nominees, a significant reduction from the previous year’s 49 nominees.
Two significant trends this year include a drop in talk series submissions, with only 13 entries, leading to a tighter competition for nominations. Additionally, the scripted variety category is now subject to a jury process due to only five submissions, generating considerable anticipation around which shows will ultimately earn nominations.
Overall, as the Television Academy navigates thinner fields across key categories, industry watchers remain eager to see how this will influence the final nominations.
