England Edges Ahead in Rain-Affected Women’s Ashes T20 Clash
CANBERRA, Australia — England took a narrow lead in a rain-affected Women’s Ashes T20 match against Australia on Thursday, with Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Sophia Dunkley steering the visitors ahead on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method before play was halted due to lightning.
England reached 69-1 in 8.4 overs, with Wyatt-Hodge scoring a rapid 37 off 27 balls and Dunkley contributing 18 off 11. The match was interrupted by lightning and heavy rain, with the players forced off the field just as England edged ahead on the DLS par score.
Earlier, Australia posted a competitive 185-5 in their 20 overs, thanks to a late onslaught from Grace Harris (35 off 17 balls) and Tahlia McGrath (48 not out). England’s fielding woes continued, with dropped catches and misfields proving costly.
“I don’t think Wyatt-Hodge is worried about the lightning,” said commentator Matt Dony. “She’s been bringing the thunder and lightning pretty effectively in these early overs.”
The match, played at Manuka Oval, was marked by tense moments as both teams battled not only each other but also the unpredictable weather. England’s openers started strongly, with Wyatt-Hodge hitting consecutive boundaries off Kim Garth and Megan Schutt. However, the dismissal of Maia Bouchier, who was caught off a reverse ramp shot, briefly shifted momentum back to Australia.
Australia’s innings was anchored by Beth Mooney, who scored a brisk 43 off 29 balls before being stumped off a wide delivery from Sophie Ecclestone. Amy Jones‘ sharp glovework was instrumental in the dismissal, highlighting her value behind the stumps.
With rain looming, the match remains finely balanced. England will need to maintain their composure if play resumes, while Australia will look to capitalize on any further interruptions to tilt the game in their favor.
