England’s Joe Root Becomes All-time Leading Test Run-Scorer
Joe Root, the former captain of England’s cricket team, made headlines on Wednesday as he became England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer. Root’s unbeaten 176 during the first Test against Pakistan in Multan saw him surpass Sir Alastair Cook‘s previous record, bringing his career total to 12,578 runs. This achievement places Root as the fifth-highest run-scorer in Test history, trailing behind legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, and Rahul Dravid.
Michael Atherton, a former England captain and current Sky Sports Cricket pundit, suggested that Root could even surpass Tendulkar as the highest run-scorer in Test cricket. “He has a chance, obviously,” Atherton noted. “We worked out last summer that he will need four years to get there. He is 33 now and will be 34 in December.” Atherton highlighted the advances in nutrition and training, suggesting they could help extend Root’s career.
Root, who was 33 at the time, spoke modestly about his achievement in an ECB interview, noting, “I’m tired, more than anything. It’s been a long day.” Despite acknowledging his achievement, Root emphasized the ongoing journey, stating, “Obviously, proud but still feel there’s plenty more left to do and many more runs to get.”
Nasser Hussain, another former England captain, praised Root’s achievement, saying, “He ticks every box. He’s got greatness, he loves the game, he’s a seriously nice lad, he’s one of ours.” Hussain underscored the magnitude of Root joining the ranks of cricket legends.
Atherton also commented on Root’s adaptation to England’s aggressive playing style under current captain Ben Stokes, known as ‘Bazball.’ Atherton believes Root has struck a balance, maintaining his natural game while contributing to England’s new positive play strategy. “I think he’s moved past that stage now,” Atherton remarked, noting Root’s re-calibration of his style.
Root’s ongoing performance in the Test against Pakistan further cements his legacy as one of cricket’s greats. With a continued flow of runs, the likelihood of Root surpassing cricket greats like Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting increases, although Tendulkar’s record remains a formidable challenge. The ongoing series against Pakistan continues to draw attention, with England poised for further matches in 2025.
