Senior Reporter Steven McInerney from Esteemed Kompany has shared his insights with Sports Mole regarding Rico Lewis‘s potential to address England’s left-back issue under interim manager Lee Carsley. England is poised to play two matches during the international break, beginning with a showdown against Greece at Wembley Stadium this Thursday, followed by a trip to another location.

Lee Carsley, overseeing his third and fourth games as provisional head of the national team, continues to grapple with the absence of a natural left-back in the squad. Several players are currently unavailable either due to injury or lack of playtime. Among them, the notable absence of a long-established full-back has left the national side exploring alternative strategies.

Two players currently vying for the left-back position are Chelsea‘s Levi Colwill and Manchester City‘s Rico Lewis. Both were trialed in this role during last month’s games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, heightening interest in who Carsley will favor for the upcoming clash.

Rico Lewis, at just 19, has already caught the attention of fans and pundits alike. Known for his versatility on the field, Lewis usually operates as a right-back or occasionally as a midfielder, and has made a notable start to his career, tallying 60 appearances under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

In an exclusive interview, McInerney said, “Almost certainly he will get a chance there. I don’t think he’s a natural there by any stretch. He favors the right-hand side of the pitch, or a midfield role, but if anyone’s smart enough in that England squad to do that, it’s Rico Lewis of all people.”

McInerney continued, praising Lewis’s innate understanding of the game and his tactical acumen. He emphasized, “He has that phenomenal understanding of the way football moves. He’s a special talent. His biggest attribute is that wonderful football brain of his.”

This international play is seen as an opportunity for Lewis to leverage his tactical versatility, as McInerney further stated that although the left-back role isn’t ideal, “for now, Rico will get his chance and I’m happy about it.” Carsley might select Colwill as a left-sided center-back, potentially positioning Lewis for a start against Greece.

Lewis’s rise in the football world is marked by remarkable adaptability, a trait highlighted by his readiness to fill various positions as needed, contributing significantly to Manchester City’s successes both domestically and in European competitions.

The England squad, enriched by five Manchester City players this month, continues to weigh its options for filling key defensive roles effectively ahead of the Nations League match-ups.
