England Women’s Rugby Dominates in WXV Match Against New Zealand
Ellie Kildunne, a prominent figure in England‘s women’s rugby team, has urged her teammates to leverage their rugby success to achieve ambitions beyond the field. The 25-year-old player, who has been prolific this season with 14 tries in just nine matches, encouraged her fellow athletes to pursue diverse avenues, as she has with modelling and photography.
“We can become whatever we want to be,” stated Kildunne, emphasizing the potential for personal and professional growth. Her remarks come as she emerges as a key figure for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in England next summer.
The England team, under the coaching of John Mitchell, has been showcasing a more ambitious style of play. “We went through years of our driving maul and set-piece being our strongest point,” Kildunne explained. “But now, we look at other spaces as well.”
England’s recent victory over New Zealand, with a final score of 49-31, demonstrates the effectiveness of this strategy. Key performances came from Jess Breach, who scored a hat-trick, and Abby Dow and Ellie Kildunne, each scoring two tries. This win marks their 19th consecutive victory, extending their streak, which began following a loss to New Zealand in the 2022 Rugby World Cup final.
Mitchell’s team looks poised for Sunday’s clash against Canada, the current WXV title holders and world number two. Kildunne noted Canada’s athleticism but emphasized England’s preparation and confidence. “It is a case of getting into that arm wrestle and working out how we need to beat them,” she said.
New Zealand’s defeat highlights challenges in maintaining their previously dominant form, with three consecutive losses including a recent match against England. Despite starting strong, the team struggled to convert early momentum into points, as noted by coach Allan Bunting.
Mitchell expressed pride in his players, particularly in their ability to adapt and execute a more expansive playing style. “It was really good to see that executed today,” Mitchell remarked.
Looking forward, England’s focus remains on their relentless pursuit of excellence as they prepare for future challenges, with a potential World Cup final against New Zealand looming on the horizon in 2025.
