Eric Cantona Claims Jim Ratcliffe Is Destroying Manchester United

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has criticized Sir Jim Ratcliffe, claiming that the club is being “destroyed” under his co-ownership. Ratcliffe, founder of the Ineos Group, acquired a 27.7% stake in Manchester United in February 2024, a deal valued at approximately £1.25 billion ($1.6 billion). Despite Ratcliffe’s involvement, the Glazer family maintains overall control of the club, although Ineos has assumed responsibility for the club’s football operations.
In a recent event at FC United, a club established by Manchester United supporters in protest against the Glazer family’s ownership, Cantona’s discontent was evident as he denounced the current management. “Since Ratcliffe arrived this team of directors try to destroy everything and they don’t respect anybody,” Cantona stated. “I feel sad to see United in this kind of situation. They decided something else. They have another strategy, another project.”
Cantona, who spent five years at United from 1992 to 1997, expressed his concerns over the club’s diminishing legacy. As Ratcliffe implements various financial strategies, including significant cuts that resulted in nearly 450 job losses, Cantona argued this threatens the very foundation of the club. “I think it’s very important to respect these people like you respect your manager and teammates,” he said.
Furthermore, Cantona addressed Ratcliffe’s plans to demolish Old Trafford to construct a new stadium. “The stadium is iconic. For me, Arsenal lost their soul when they left Highbury, and I’m sure a lot of fans miss Highbury,” he remarked. “Can you imagine Liverpool playing in another stadium than Anfield? It’s impossible. I don’t think United can play in another stadium than Old Trafford.”
On the topic of future changes at the club, Cantona commented on the decision to end Sir Alex Ferguson’s role as a global ambassador. Ferguson, who won 13 Premier League titles during his time as manager, will step down at the end of the season. Cantona reflected, “He doesn’t want Sir Alex Ferguson as an ambassador anymore. He is more than a legend.”
Cantona also mentioned his offer to assist Ratcliffe in rebuilding the club, which he claims was dismissed. “I can put filming aside and concentrate on helping you to rebuild something. And they don’t care,” he stated. “I support United because I really love United, but now if I was a fan and I had to choose a club, I don’t think I would choose United.” He criticized the current management’s direction, saying, “They have another strategy, another project. Do you feel close to this project? I don’t think so.”
Manchester United has not issued a response to Cantona’s remarks, while BBC Sport has approached Ineos for a statement. As the situation unfolds, supporters remain vigilant about the future of their beloved club amid rising tensions between management and fandom.
