Erik Lira Signs Contract Extension with Cruz Azul Until 2029

México City, Mexico – Erik Lira, a key midfielder for Cruz Azul, has agreed to a contract extension until June 29, 2029, ahead of the Clásico Joven against America this weekend. Sources confirm that Lira will officially sign the renewal upon his return from international duty with the Mexican National Team.
The negotiations were aided by Cruz Azul’s President, Víctor Velázquez, who worked to reach a favorable agreement for both the player and the club. Lira recognizes that staying with Cruz Azul could elevate his career prospects with the national team.
This new deal includes improved salary terms and offers flexibility for Lira, enabling him to negotiate with foreign clubs if an attractive offer arises. Lira, 25, is considered a significant figure for Cruz Azul’s fanbase.
Cruz Azul is preparing for its next Liga MX match against America while facing absences from several call-ups for international play. Recently back from the U-20 World Cup in Chile, players such as Amaury Morales and goalkeeper Emmanuel Ochoa have rejoined the squad at La Noria.
Following their return, the club will monitor the condition of Mateo Levy, who is recovering from a concussion. Other players who were called to the national team, including Lira, Jorge Sánchez, and Carlos Rodríguez, are expected to report back to training with coach Nicolás Larcamón on Wednesday.
The contract renewal showcases Cruz Azul’s commitment to building a competitive team, though the possibility of international opportunities remains a concern for the club.
