Ernie Johnson Misses Inside the NBA, Fans Breathe Easy

ATLANTA, Ga. — Viewers tuning into tonight’s episode of Inside the NBA were met with an unexpected absence. Ernie Johnson, the show’s beloved host known as ‘The Godfather,’ was missing as the show aired live on TNT.
Instead, Adam Lefkoe took the reins as host, typically seen on Tuesdays alongside Shaquille O’Neal, Vince Carter, and Candace Parker. During the broadcast, Lefkoe reassured viewers that Johnson was not leaving the show but was instead feeling under the weather. “We hope you’re feeling better, Ernie,” he said, sending well wishes to his colleague.
Charles Barkley, known for his humorous remarks, added a light-hearted message for Johnson: “We love you too, Ernie. Get those dishes done, Ernie.” While Johnson missed tonight’s panel, he is expected to return soon as the show continues its bi-weekly schedule.
Johnson, 68, remains a central figure on Inside the NBA, even as the show transitions to ESPN due to the NBA’s new media rights deal. Sources indicate that Johnson has a long-term contract with the network, the particulars of which remain undisclosed. In a recent interview, he confirmed, “When you tune into some of these nights on ABC or ESPN, the pregame show is going to be us.” He also noted that the show will still broadcast from Atlanta.
The Inside the NBA team, comprising Johnson, Shaq, Kenny Smith, and Barkley, is known for its dynamic chemistry and engaging analysis, making the possibility of any one of them stepping away from the show a concern for fans. Kenny Smith recently signed a multi-year deal with TNT, while Barkley secured a ten-year extension worth $210 million three years ago, signaling his commitment to the network despite other offers. “I’m informing NBC that I will not accept their offer. I’m gonna cancel future meetings with Amazon… My heart is always and will be at Turner Sports,” Barkley stated, indicating his allegiance to TNT and the future of Inside the NBA.
Additionally, Shaquille O’Neal has reportedly signed a multi-year deal with TNT, said to be worth over $15 million annually. Although official confirmation is pending, the core panel of Inside the NBA is expected to remain intact for the move to ESPN.
Barkley also expressed the excitement of the transition, albeit with frustration over media coverage. “Y’all are talking about who’s in second place. That’s the reason I get pissed… That’s cause you fools on other networks which we gonna become fools next year cause we’ll be working on that network.” Despite his strong sentiments, he reassured fans that the iconic panel will be back next season.
