49ers’ Brock Purdy Eyes Contract Extension After Stellar Season
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Less than 24 hours after the San Francisco 49ers‘ season ended, the spotlight turned to quarterback Brock Purdy‘s impending contract extension. Purdy, 25, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, is now eligible for a new deal after outperforming his rookie contract.
Purdy, who signed a four-year rookie contract averaging $934,252 annually, expressed his desire to secure a new deal quickly. “If there’s an opportunity to be able to get that done quick, that’d be great,” Purdy said. “Just so we can get back for phase one, get after it with the receivers and our team and just continue to grow.”
Both Purdy and the 49ers have strong incentives to finalize a deal promptly. For Purdy, a new contract would provide financial security and reinforce the team’s confidence in him. For the 49ers, locking in Purdy early would offer cost certainty and help manage the salary cap effectively.
Coach Kyle Shanahan emphasized Purdy’s importance to the team. “Brock is the leader of our team. I’ve loved these three years with Brock. I plan on being with Brock here the whole time I’m here,” Shanahan said.
However, negotiating a deal of this magnitude is complex. Purdy’s performance has set high expectations, and his contract could rival those of top quarterbacks like Jared Goff and Tua Tagovailoa, who recently signed deals worth over $200 million.
Since becoming the starter in Week 13 of 2022, Purdy has ranked fourth in QBR (70.2), third in passing yards (9,452), and first in yards per attempt (8.9). His record-setting 2023 season further bolstered his case for a lucrative extension.
Despite a challenging 2024 season, where Purdy faced injuries among key teammates and struggled in adverse conditions, the 49ers remain committed to him. “What we know about Brock is that he’s our guy,” said general manager John Lynch. “We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time.”
Purdy’s teammates also voiced their support. “I think he’s done such a good job of managing the team,” said running back Christian McCaffrey. “I’m excited for him, I’m pumped for him and I’m proud of him. [We’re] lucky he’s on our team.”
As negotiations unfold, Purdy remains focused on his role with the 49ers. “I’m not really sure what it all is going to look like or entail, but I know that I’m the guy for this organization,” Purdy said. “And that I can do what it takes to help lead us where we want to go and I’m confident in that.”
