49ers Claim Cornerback Tre Tomlinson After Rams Waive Him

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – The San Francisco 49ers have claimed cornerback Tre Tomlinson off waivers from the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced on Friday. Tomlinson, who was waived by the Rams on Thursday, is a 25-year-old former sixth-round draft pick from Texas Christian University.

Tomlinson’s move to San Francisco marks a swift change in his professional career. After being selected by Los Angeles as the 182nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, he played 15 games over two seasons, recording five tackles and eight on special teams. He missed the entire 2024 season after being placed on Injured Reserve in late August.

“Adjusting to the NFL has its challenges, especially dealing with injuries,” said Tomlinson, reflecting on his brief time with the Rams. “I’m looking forward to making an impact with the 49ers.”

During his rookie season in 2023, Tomlinson contributed significantly on special teams, logging 318 snaps while also participating in one postseason game. In college, he gained recognition for his defensive skills, winning the 2022 Jim Thorpe Award for being the best defensive back in college football.

Tomlinson’s college career at Texas Christian University was notable, where he appeared in 49 games, totaling 125 tackles, 41 passes defensed, five interceptions, four tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. His impressive performance not only earned him the Jim Thorpe Award but also highlighted his potential as a valuable NFL player.

At 5 feet 9 inches and 177 pounds, Tomlinson is the nephew of Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson. This familial connection adds to his story as he transitions to his new team.
