49ers Expected to Release Defensive Lineman Ahead of Free Agency

San Francisco, California — ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell predicts the San Francisco 49ers will release several veteran players, including defensive lineman Floyd, prior to the onset of free agency.
Barnwell noted that the 49ers are poised to make significant changes to their defensive line, parting ways with Floyd and possibly others like Jordan Elliott. This impending overhaul comes as the team embraces a new defensive philosophy under head coach Robert Saleh, who is expected to implement fresh strategies that may not align with Floyd’s skill set.
Floyd was originally drafted in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft and had a successful stint with the Chicago Bears before winning a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams. While his performance has declined from elite status, experts believe he has the potential to contribute effectively in the right environment.
Should he become available, teams like the Baltimore Ravens may consider signing Floyd. Given their struggles last season relying on younger players, adding a veteran presence could boost their defensive performance. Although he may not excel in run-stopping, a tailored scheme could revitalize his production.
Floyd’s potential market is not limited to just the Ravens. The Dallas Cowboys might seek to secure him on a cost-effective, one-year deal as they prepare for the loss of long-time veteran Demarcus Lawrence in free agency. This opportunity could present a significant advantage for the Cowboys’ defensive line.
Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals, after making numerous acquisitions, are unlikely to afford top-tier defensive linemen, but if Floyd becomes available, he may fill necessary gaps without underperforming expectations.
The Kansas City Chiefs also face a decision regarding their defensive roster. Despite having standout Chris Jones, the team could benefit from Floyd’s experience as they look to bolster their line alongside George Karlaftis.
In the NFC South, the New Orleans Saints are considering salary cap issues and may need to release veteran players. Signing Floyd at a discounted rate could provide added depth and expertise to their defense, even if he doesn’t fully replace the production of other key players.
In related news, veteran quarterback Daniel Jones has inked a new contract following stints with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings. Additionally, the New York Jets have taken a risk on former Ravens cornerback Brandon Stephens with a three-year deal. The Bengals are monitoring the Hendrickson situation, while offensive lineman Will Fries has secured a new contract after spending 2024 with the Indianapolis Colts.
