PALM BEACH, Fla. — San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch expressed optimism Monday about finalizing a long-term contract extension with quarterback Brock Purdy. Speaking at the NFL’s annual league meeting, Lynch stated he believes a deal can be reached soon, though no timeline has been established yet.

“I think we’re going to get the deal done,” Lynch said. “That’s what I believe. We’ll just leave it at that.” This statement comes as negotiations continue around a potential contract that could increase Purdy’s earnings significantly, rising from the $5 million he is expected to make under his rookie deal in 2025.

While both Lynch and Purdy have not laid out a firm schedule for contract discussions, Lynch acknowledged the urgency. Purdy had previously indicated a desire for resolution by the start of the offseason program in mid-April to avoid missing organized team activities.

Historically, the 49ers have had delays with significant contract extensions. Previous stars like George Kittle and Nick Bosa signed their lucrative deals only shortly before the start of training camp. However, Lynch hinted that a quicker resolution could be possible this time.

“I don’t think it’s too optimistic to get it done by then,” Lynch said. “I understand why Brock wants that. We’d like that very much, so we’ve just got to find that right place for both sides.”

The negotiations around Purdy come at a critical time for the 49ers, who have witnessed the departure of several key players this offseason. However, Lynch indicated that the 49ers are committed to retaining Purdy as they reconfigure their roster for improved performance in 2025.

“Brock wants to be with us,” Lynch said. “We want Brock to be with us. When that’s the case, these things typically get done.”

In addition to discussions with Purdy, Lynch provided updates on wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is recovering from a knee injury. Lynch mentioned that Aiyuk’s rehabilitation is progressing positively after a meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles led to “good reviews” of his health.

Aiyuk is due a significant bonus of $22.85 million, further solidifying his role with the team as the 49ers continue to navigate offseason roster decisions.

According to Lynch, the team’s spending strategy this offseason has been cautious to ensure financial viability for upcoming contract extensions, including for Purdy. Despite the current restraint in spending, Lynch expressed confidence that once Purdy’s deal is finalized, the team will return to its history of substantial investments.

“The cash spending is down. The year’s not over,” Lynch noted. “If and when we get our quarterback done, we’ll probably again be a top-two or -three cash spending team.”

As the organization prepares for the NFL Draft next month, Lynch emphasized the need to revitalize the team’s roster, which struggled significantly last season with a 6-11 record. He noted the importance of infusing youth into the squad, particularly after seeing aging players contribute to a lackluster performance.

“We still have a lot of Hall of Fame-worthy players. There’s a tremendous core that we can go competitive with and add young players to,” Lynch said. “The draft is an important part of fixing that.”

As offseason activities approach, the pressure is mounting on the 49ers to address their roster needs and secure their star quarterback, all while navigating the financial complexities inherent in the NFL.
