SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to make quarterback Brock Purdy one of the highest-paid players in franchise history as contract negotiations begin. Purdy, the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has emerged as the team’s long-term starter, earning praise from coaches, teammates, and analysts alike.

“We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time,” general manager John Lynch said. Head coach Kyle Shanahan echoed the sentiment, stating, “I plan on being with Brock here the whole time I’m here.” Linebacker Fred Warner, a team leader, added, “He will be the 49ers quarterback for a very, very, very long time with plenty of Super Bowl rings on his fingers.”

Purdy, who has started 42 games including playoffs, has proven his ability to lead the team through adversity. Despite injuries to key offensive weapons like Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and Christian McCaffrey during the 2024 season, Purdy maintained his composure and delivered critical performances. His 104.9 passer rating since 2022 ranks second among qualifying quarterbacks, and he leads the NFL in yards per attempt and yards per completion during that span.

Shanahan highlighted Purdy’s resilience, particularly in his first meaningful game against the Miami Dolphins in 2022. “After the game, it was, ‘Holy s— did that guy play good!’” Shanahan recalled. Purdy’s ability to handle pressure and make quick decisions has solidified his standing as the 49ers’ franchise quarterback.

However, challenges remain. Purdy’s performance in inclement weather has been a concern, with a 48.7 percent completion rate and a 55.9 passer rating in games with precipitation. Additionally, his interception rate increased slightly in 2024, tied for the fourth-most in the league. Despite these hurdles, Purdy’s leadership and consistency have endeared him to the organization.

As contract talks progress, the 49ers are expected to offer Purdy a deal that reflects his value to the team. With key players like George Kittle and Fred Warner supporting him, Purdy’s future in San Francisco appears bright.
