49ers Face Tough Decisions on Deebo Samuel’s Future After Disappointing Season
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers, coming off a disappointing 2024 season that saw them miss the playoffs after reaching the Super Bowl the previous year, face critical decisions this offseason, particularly regarding star wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
Samuel, who signed a three-year, $71 million extension after an All-Pro season in 2022, has seen a decline in production. In 2024, he recorded just 670 receiving yards, his lowest since 2020. With one year remaining on his contract and a $15 million cap hit, trade rumors have swirled around the 2021 Pro Bowler.
“The 49ers are not going to keep everybody,” wrote analyst Matt Gretz. “With Samuel entering the final year of his deal and starting to show signs of decline, the time is right for them to move on.”
Samuel’s potential departure comes as the 49ers look to manage their salary cap, particularly with quarterback Brock Purdy expected to sign a lucrative extension. The team also has depth at wide receiver, with Brandon Aiyuk securing a long-term deal last year and 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall showing promise. Additionally, Jauan Jennings emerged as a reliable target, amassing 975 receiving yards in 2024.
Samuel’s trade value remains significant, and a deal could provide the 49ers with additional flexibility. “He could garner a decent return in a trade and give the 49ers more room to operate with Purdy,” Gretz noted.
While Samuel’s future remains uncertain, the 49ers appear prepared to move forward with Aiyuk and Pearsall as their top receivers. The team’s decision will likely shape their offensive strategy as they aim to rebound in 2025.
