PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George has returned to the court after a series of groin-related setbacks, while star center Joel Embiid continues to miss games due to ongoing knee issues. The team faces mounting challenges as they navigate a shorthanded roster during a critical stretch of the NBA season.

George, a nine-time All-Star, missed multiple games starting Jan. 8, 2025, before returning for a 43-minute shift against the New York Knicks. However, he was subsequently downgraded on the injury report and missed matchups against the Indiana Pacers and Milwaukee Bucks. The Sixers lost both games by double digits. George was cleared to play against the Denver Nuggets on Jan. 21, contributing 11 points, five rebounds, and nine assists in 28 minutes, though the team suffered a 35-point loss.

Meanwhile, Embiid’s absence has become a growing concern for the Sixers. The reigning MVP has missed 10 consecutive games, including Friday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, marking his third absence against the Cavs this season. Embiid has been managing a surgically repaired knee since the start of the year and recently experienced swelling, prompting the team to rule him out for at least three games. His latest setback stems from a foot sprain suffered on Christmas Day, which re-aggravated after he appeared in four of five games following the injury.

“It’s been a tough stretch for us,” said Sixers head coach Nick Nurse. “We’re doing everything we can to manage Joel’s health and get him back to full strength, but we also need to focus on the players we have available.”

George’s return provides a glimmer of hope for the Sixers, who are currently 5-5 in their last 10 games. The veteran forward has been a key contributor this season, averaging 22.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. His presence on the court is critical as the team looks to stay competitive in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

As the Sixers prepare for their next game, the focus remains on Embiid’s recovery timeline. The team has not provided a specific return date, but sources indicate he will undergo further evaluation next week. In the meantime, the Sixers will rely on George and their supporting cast to keep their playoff hopes alive.
