SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers are on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator after head coach Kyle Shanahan emphasized the need for adaptability in the team’s defensive strategy. Shanahan, who has led the 49ers since 2017, expressed his desire for a coordinator who can adjust schemes based on personnel and game situations, marking a shift from the team’s current approach.

Nick Sorensen, who served as defensive coordinator in 2024, will not return to the role but may transition to the special teams coordinator position. Shanahan praised Sorensen’s contributions but acknowledged the challenges faced last season, particularly with injuries to key players like Nick Bosa. The 49ers’ defense ranked eighth in yards allowed but struggled in critical areas such as takeaways and sacks, especially during the latter half of the season.

“I love the scheme we’ve had here,” Shanahan said. “But I do think people adjust to schemes, and you have to adjust too, depending on your personnel. That was tougher for us this year.” Shanahan revealed that internal candidate Brandon Staley, who oversaw nickel cornerbacks and led the weekly takeaway meetings in 2024, will be interviewed for the position. Other potential candidates include former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh and ex-linebacker Jeff Ulbrich.

Shanahan also addressed the future of quarterback Brock Purdy, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Both Shanahan and general manager John Lynch expressed their commitment to securing Purdy’s long-term future with the team. “Brock’s been a stud,” Shanahan said. “We’re capable of winning the Super Bowl with him.” Purdy is expected to seek a contract averaging over $50 million annually.

Meanwhile, the 49ers face decisions on other key players, including receiver Deebo Samuel and linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Samuel, coming off a disappointing season, is expected to remain with the team, while Greenlaw’s future is less certain as he approaches free agency. The team also restructured defensive tackle Javon Hargrave‘s contract, leaving his return in question.

As the 49ers navigate these changes, Shanahan remains focused on building a roster capable of contending for a Super Bowl. “We’re not into losing really good players,” he said. “But that’s also a very hard challenge.”
