49ers Set to Release Two-Time Pro Bowler Javon Hargrave

San Francisco, CA — The San Francisco 49ers have informed two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Javon Hargrave that he will be released on March 12, the first day of the league’s new year, according to multiple sources.
Hargrave, selected in the third round of the 2016 draft from South Carolina State, has built a notable career since his debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was a consistent starter for four seasons. His performance in Pittsburgh led him to sign a three-year, $39 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2020 offseason. In 2022, Hargrave achieved a career-high 11 sacks and significantly contributed to the Eagles’ Super Bowl run.
Following his success in Philadelphia, Hargrave secured a four-year, $84 million deal with the 49ers. He represented the team in his second Pro Bowl in the 2023 season while helping the 49ers advance to the playoffs. However, the previous year saw Hargrave sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a partially torn triceps sustained in Week 3.
His impending free agency is expected to generate considerable interest from teams looking for a veteran defensive presence. The 49ers are now tasked with finding a suitable replacement for Hargrave, thrusting them into a competitive free agent market.
Several teams may pursue Hargrave as they seek to strengthen their defensive fronts. The Pittsburgh Steelers, his original team, are in search of enhancements after struggling in the postseason, where they allowed 299 rushing yards in their wild-card playoff loss.
Other teams likely to seek Hargrave include the Detroit Lions, who aim to shore up a defensive unit that faltered in the playoffs, and the Buffalo Bills, facing a potential exodus at defensive tackle. The Chicago Bears may also evaluate signing Hargrave as they seek to revitalize a defense ranked low against the run.
The Green Bay Packers, who have consistently contended in the NFC, could benefit from Hargrave’s experience and skill set, particularly in improving their pass rush.
As the NFL prepares for the onset of free agency, the landscape of team rosters is expected to shift dramatically. The free agency window opens concurrent with the NFL’s new year, which begins on March 12, presenting a crucial opportunity for team executives to retool their squads.
