76ers to Sign Chuma Okeke Ahead of Mavericks Matchup

DALLAS, Texas – The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to add former NBA first-round pick Chuma Okeke to their roster on a 10-day contract ahead of their game against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. This signing comes as the team navigates a challenging season filled with injuries and roster changes.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the deal for Okeke is imminent and could be finalized shortly before the game at 1 PM ET. Okeke previously had a brief stint with the Sixers earlier this season, where he played only two minutes during one game before returning to the G League.
“He brings a unique skill set that we think will help us in the short term,” said a source close to the team, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to comment publicly on personnel matters.
Okeke, who was selected 16th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, had a promising start to his career, particularly in the 2021-2022 season where he averaged nine points, five rebounds, and two assists per game. However, he has struggled to find a consistent role since then.
This will be Okeke’s second 10-day contract of the season, as he aims to make an impact during his time on the court and potentially secure a more lasting place in the Sixers’ lineup. The team has recently signed Oshae Brissett to a similar deal, who has started off strong with performances that could bolster Okeke’s chances of staying in the league.
In their previous encounter, the Sixers faced a tough loss but will look to improve against the Mavericks, who are also dealing with their fair share of injuries. The current state of the roster has left the Philadelphia team at a crossroads, trying to balance the urgency of securing a favorable draft pick while also fielding a competitive team.
Head coach Nick Nurse expressed the need for the players to keep pushing hard despite the season’s trials, stating, “We have to keep our energy up and play hard. Every game is a chance to learn and improve,” highlighting the importance of the remaining games in shaping the team’s future.
The upcoming matchup against the Mavericks is critical, as the Sixers’ ability to compete and possibly come away with a victory could influence their draft positioning, given their current standings. Injuries have plagued both teams this season, and this game represents a pivotal point for both the Sixers and Mavericks as they fend off any long-term ramifications of these challenges.
