76ers Sign Chuma Okeke to 10-Day Contract from G League’s Westchester Knicks
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Philadelphia 76ers have signed forward Chuma Okeke to a 10-day contract, acquiring him from the NBA G League‘s Westchester Knicks, according to sources reported by NBA insider Shams Charania on Thursday.
Okeke, 26, was a potential candidate for an open roster spot with the New York Knicks, but the Sixers moved quickly to secure the former first-round pick. The 6-foot-8 forward was selected 16th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic after a standout collegiate career at Auburn University.
However, Okeke’s NBA journey has been marred by injuries, including a torn ACL that delayed his professional debut until the 2020-21 season. Despite showing flashes of potential, he struggled to secure a consistent role in Orlando’s rotation over five seasons, averaging 7.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
This offseason, Okeke joined the Westchester Knicks, the G League affiliate of the New York Knicks, in hopes of revitalizing his career. While he has yet to play in the NBA this season, his versatility and defensive prowess have kept him on the radar of several teams.
“Chuma has always had the tools to be a valuable contributor in this league,” said an NBA scout who spoke on condition of anonymity. “He just needs the right opportunity to showcase his skills.”
The Sixers, currently battling injuries and seeking depth in their frontcourt, are betting on Okeke’s potential. His signing comes ahead of their highly anticipated matchup against the Boston Celtics on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Okeke’s addition provides Philadelphia with a low-risk, high-reward option as they navigate a competitive Eastern Conference. If he impresses during his 10-day stint, he could earn a longer-term deal with the team.
For Okeke, this marks a fresh start and a chance to prove he belongs in the NBA. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and ready to contribute however I can,” Okeke said in a statement released by the Sixers.
