Thomas Morstead Nfl Punter Signing

San Francisco, CA — The San Francisco 49ers officially announced the signing of punter Thomas Morstead on May 28, 2025. This move involved releasing punter Mitch Wishnowsky, who struggled with injuries last season.

Wishnowsky, who joined the 49ers in 2019, has not played consistently due to knee and back injuries that sidelined him for eight games last year. His net punting average of 36.3 yards in 2024 marked the lowest of his career, nearly five yards lower than his average during his first five seasons.

In addition to Morstead, the 49ers also signed linebacker Chazz Surratt to a one-year deal, waiving linebacker DaShaun White in the process. Surratt, a former third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, has played a total of 41 games across four seasons, tallying 19 defensive tackles and 18 on special teams.

Morstead, a seasoned punter at 39 years old, was originally drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2009. Over his 16-year career, he made a name for himself by appearing in 255 games and producing 960 punts for 44,944 yards, averaging 46.8 yards per punt.

Morstead has also had postseason experience, punting in 16 playoff games and earning accolades such as a Pro Bowl selection in 2013. His time at Southern Methodist University included 166 punts for 7,201 yards.

Meanwhile, Surratt played his last season with the New York Jets, recording career-high numbers in games played and tackles. He joins the 49ers looking to make an impact in their defensive lineup.

White was initially signed to the practice squad last September and played just one game for the team last season. The release of Wishnowsky means Morstead will take over the role, with questions about Wishnowsky’s future in the league remaining.
