Espino Advances Throwing Distance in Ongoing Rehab Journey

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Cleveland Guardians pitcher Triston Espino has made significant progress in his rehabilitation, extending his throwing distance to 120 feet on Wednesday. This development comes as part of his recovery following two shoulder surgeries over the past 21 months.
Despite the encouraging strides, Espino faces a long road ahead before returning to the mound. The Guardians have not ruled him out for the 2025 season entirely; however, he is unlikely to make any game appearances until late in the year. “It’s a step in the right direction, but there is still a lot of work to do,” said Guardians’ head coach, Terry Francona.
Espino’s journey has been filled with challenges. After his initial surgery, hopes were high for a swift recovery, but complications led to a second procedure, significantly delaying his return. The 25-year-old right-hander is being cautious in his approach. “I want to ensure that I’m fully ready before I step back onto the field,” he noted.
As he continues his rehabilitation, the Guardians remain optimistic about Espino’s potential contributions. In 2021, the young pitcher showed promise, boasting an impressive strikeout rate, which has led the team to keep a close eye on his recovery process.
The franchise’s medical staff is closely monitoring his workouts to assess his strength and stamina levels throughout his rehabilitation. “We’re hopeful, but it’s imperative that we take it one step at a time,” Francona added.
The team’s management and fans alike are eager for Espino’s return as they gear up for the upcoming season.
