Esteban Ocon Reflects on Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Transition Struggles

MIAMI, Florida — Esteban Ocon, now racing for the Haas team, shared his insights into Lewis Hamilton‘s ongoing challenges transitioning from Mercedes to Ferrari machinery. Ocon, a former Mercedes reserve driver, understands the technical difficulties unique to each car’s design.
Hamilton moved to Ferrari prior to the 2025 season, leaving behind a successful stint at Mercedes that included six World Championships. With Ferrari’s current car, he has struggled to find his footing, having not finished ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc in any grand prix so far. Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Ocon was asked about Hamilton’s slow adaptation and whether it has been underestimated by others.
“I think it’s very difficult,” Ocon said in a media briefing. “Especially when you change car philosophy. The Haas and Ferrari cars have plenty of similarities.” He reflected on his own experience with Mercedes and how it differs from his current setup, emphasizing that adapting is not easy even for seasoned drivers.
Hamilton, who has yet to finish on the podium with Ferrari, expressed his frustration over his performance, admitting the adjustment is proving painful. “It’s going to be painful. At the moment, there’s no fix,” he stated after a disappointing outing in Saudi Arabia just before Miami.
Ocon believes that experience can sometimes complicate the transition to a new car. “The more you drive, the more you learn, but at some point, you just have to deal with it,” he added, acknowledging that even he has faced challenges with Haas.
Ferrari’s approach to handling team dynamics has come under scrutiny amid Hamilton’s struggles. Ralf Schumacher noted that Hamilton enjoyed a certain level of “special protection” at Mercedes, which is absent in his current role. Schumacher remarked that Hamilton’s performance could hinge on whether Ferrari provides the support needed for success.
As the season progresses, both Hamilton and Ferrari face mounting pressure to deliver results. With technical difficulties evident, team morale and strategy execution will play crucial roles in Hamilton’s adjustment to a new team.
“I’m sure he will find a way very quickly,” Ocon concluded, expressing confidence in Hamilton’s ability to adapt despite current setbacks.
