Evaluating Stephen Vogt’s Strategic Decisions in ALCS
Stephen Vogt, the rookie manager of the Cleveland Guardians, has taken the team on a noteworthy journey this season. However, as the Guardians contend for a spot in the World Series, some of Vogt’s strategic choices have drawn scrutiny, particularly during the recent American League Championship Series (ALCS).
One area of debate has been Vogt’s approach to bullpen management. In game two of the series, Vogt opted to bring in left-handed reliever Erik Sabrowski after Eli Morgan successfully managed the middle of the New York Yankees lineup. Vogt’s decision was based on the statistics that indicated Sabrowski could handle the upcoming hitters such as Jazz Chisholm and Anthony Rizzo. However, this choice meant that Sabrowski had to pitch on back-to-back days, a scenario he had not faced in the regular season. Critics argue that Vogt might have been better served by relying more on pitchers like Morgan and Pedro Avila to provide length, especially given the Guardians’ starting pitchers have struggled to deliver deep outings.
Furthermore, Vogt has been questioned for his use of Emmanuel Clase, the Guardians’ top reliever. Analysts suggest that Clase should have been deployed in critical moments earlier in games rather than being reserved for traditional closer duties, as witnessed in game two when Hunter Gaddis was chosen to face the top of the Yankees lineup instead.
At the plate, the performance of Bo Naylor has been another topic of concern. Despite Naylor’s struggles, some argue that he is still a more viable option than Austin Hedges, whose hitting statistics are consistently at the bottom of the league. Vogt’s challenge is finding a balance between giving Naylor opportunities to improve and using Hedges when the Guardians have a lead late in games.
The right field position has been particularly unstable, with multiple players such as Jhonkensy Noel and Will Brennan failing to make an impact. Vogt has given Daniel Schneemann a chance after he showed promise, but the right field remains the team’s weakest link, leaving Vogt to decide on the least detrimental option.
Another focus is on pitching strategy against Yankees’ star Aaron Judge. Vogt’s pitchers, like Gaddis, have pitched to Judge in ways that allow him to extend effectively, something Vogt needs to address by making him chase pitches outside the zone.
Despite these hurdles, Vogt’s inaugural season has been a historic one for the Guardians, leading to their first postseason in years and capturing a playoff series victory. As the pressure mounts in their series against the Yankees, Vogt’s decisions will continue to be pivotal in their pursuit of a championship.
