Exploring the Dark Beauty of Matteo Garrone’s Tale of Tales

Rome, Italy — Ten years after its release, Matteo Garrone’s “Tale of Tales” remains a potent story of desire and consequence, weaving together three eerie narratives set against a backdrop of medieval fantasy. Combining elements from fairy tales by Italian poet Giambattista Basile, the anthology film explores the perils of getting what you wish for, with each tale unfolding in one of three fictional kingdoms: Longtrellis, Strongcliff, and Highhills.
Garrone introduces viewers to the Queen of Longtrellis, played by Salma Hayek, who longs for a son. Meanwhile, Violet, portrayed by Bebe Cave, seeks a husband in Highhills, and elderly Dora, played by Hayley Carmichael, craves youth. As their wishes come true, the women quickly realize the dark realities accompanying their desires. The film highlights how relentless ambitions can lead to personal tragedy and moral decay.
In the Queen’s story, her son Elias (Christian Lees) rebels against her overbearing grasp, seeking freedom from her obsession. Violet’s tale takes a horrifying turn when she marries an Ogre (Guillaume Delaunay), leading her into a perilous existence defined by her wifely duties. Meanwhile, Dora’s enchantment to regain youth results in a hollow victory, as she loses her sister Imma in the process. These interactions tie together a cautionary message: beware of what you wish for.
Much like the characters in “The Fall,” Garrett’s protagonists embody resilience amid their suffering. The Queen sacrifices her life literally by becoming a monstrous figure, while Violet’s struggle leads her to confront her own identity without the need for a man. Dora’s pursuit of superficial satisfaction costs her the only family she has left. Each character’s journey illustrates how desires can warp intentions and lead to unforeseen consequences.
In addition to its compelling narratives, the film’s visual aesthetic captivates audiences, showcasing Italy’s breathtaking landscapes. Filmed in stunning locations, the movie features octagonal castles, grand throne rooms, and soaring gorges, merging the beauty of its environments with the grim tales of its characters. This stark contrast enhances the film’s underlying themes, signifying the dual nature of desire and magic.
Garrone’s choice to embrace practical effects instead of CGI pays off, resulting in a visually striking portrayal of a fantastical realm. The lavish settings juxtaposed with horrific developments—such as the Queen’s transformation into a ghastly creature and the violent downfall of Violet—exemplify the film’s exploration of dark themes within its vibrant world.
As “Tale of Tales” marks its tenth anniversary, it serves as a reminder of the film’s powerful lessons surrounding desire, identity, and the often hidden horrors of achieving one’s wishes. Its blend of enchanting visuals and sobering narratives continues to resonate with viewers, proving the timeless relevance of its cautionary tales.
