Ezekiel Elliott’s Reduced Role in Dallas Raises Questions

Ezekiel Elliott Dallas Cowboys 2024

Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has recently commented on his diminished playing time since his much-anticipated return to the team. Elliott, who was a significant figure in the Cowboys’ offense during his initial stint, has found his opportunities limited this season. “I’ve talked a little bit to the coaches,” said Elliott, not wanting to “make a big deal” out of his reduced role, as reported by Clarence Hill Jr. on DLLS Sports.

In his first game of the season, Elliott managed to record ten carries for 40 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ victory over the Cleveland Browns. However, in the games that followed, his involvement has decreased significantly with no more than six carries per game and an average of 2.9 yards per carry during that period. In a recent game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Elliott played only 23 snaps, highlighted by backfield rival Rico Dowdle getting most of the workload.

Rico Dowdle has been more productive in the run game, showing efficiency with 221 yards on 54 carries, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Dowdle’s performance has secured him a greater share of the responsibility in the Cowboys’ backfield. Meanwhile, Elliott’s role has been largely confined to serving as the second option, despite expressing a desire for more opportunities in red zone and short-yardage situations.

Elliott’s performance this year follows a challenging 2023 season with the New England Patriots, where he managed just 652 yards on 184 carries, a career-low. The 29-year-old’s current statistics continue to reflect a decline in his output, averaging only 3.3 yards per carry this season.

As the Cowboys prepare to face the Detroit Lions, Elliott and his team are keenly aware of De’troit’s formidable rush defense. The Lions have allowed just 90.8 rushing yards per game this season, ranking fourth best in the NFL. This defensive strength is likely to steer the Cowboys towards a pass-heavy strategy.

Despite these challenges, Elliott maintains his focus on being a supportive teammate. “I’ve been focusing on continuing to help lead this team and I’m not making it about me; it’s about this football team winning football games,” Elliott stated.
