Falcons Fall to Ravens in Preseason Matchup
BALTIMORE — In a close preseason showdown, the Atlanta Falcons faced off against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium, ultimately losing 13-12.
The Falcons dressed 53 players for the game, but none of them were starters, aside from those on special teams. Injuries from their previous game against the Miami Dolphins resulted in an expanded inactive list for this matchup, with 37 players not in uniform.
Some key players like outside linebacker Bralen Trice and defensive back Harrison Hand were placed on the reserve list due to knee injuries. Meanwhile, head coach Raheem Morris reported that safety DeMarcco Hellams would be out for a significant period due to an ankle injury.
As a result of these injuries, the coaching staff opted to give more playing time to those who are battling for a spot on the team. The list of players who didn’t dress for the game was extensive, including notable names such as quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr., along with star wide receivers like Darnell Mooney, Drake London, and others.
On the defensive side, the Falcons’ starters also included some big names who sat this one out. Instead, the defense consisted of players like defensive linemen Zion Logue and Brandon Dorlus, outside linebackers James Smith-Williams and Demone Harris, and cornerbacks like Anthony Johnson and Natrone Brooks.
The Ravens managed to pile up 150 offensive yards in the first half, with quarterback Josh Johnson completing all his passes before handing over the reins to rookie Devin Leary. The Ravens struggled on the ground, averaging only 1.7 yards per carry, but Johnson’s accuracy kept the offense moving.
In the second half, Ravens rookie quarterback Emory Jones threw a notable 56-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dayton Wade, who made an impressive double move to shake off his defender, Anthony Johnson.
Although the Falcons defense earned six tackles for loss during the game, they struggled in the secondary, highlighted by the lack of pass breakups against the Ravens’ offense.
As for the Falcons’ offense, quarterback Taylor Heinicke threw for 114 yards but could not connect for a touchdown. His backup, John Paddock, also saw action and had 78 yards through the air. The offense lacked the star power, with major players sitting out, but wide receiver Chris Blair stepped up with four catches for 91 yards.
The game’s only touchdown for the Falcons came from rookie running back Jase McClellan with a 3-yard run. However, his attempt on a 2-point conversion fell short.
Kicker Younghoe Koo had a tough day, missing three field goals, although he did nail a 54-yarder for the Falcons’ first points. Koo also left his mark by making a tackle during the opening kickoff, showcasing his hustle.
